On assignment: Girevoy Sport Finnish Championship 2009

Recently I was on an assignment, shooting people who lift these casted balls with a handle. That is, people competing in kettlebell lifting. The event was Girevoy Sport Finnish Championship 2009 hosted by Finnish Kettlebell Association at Hämeenlinna.

This event was first of it’s kind held in Finland an there were contestants from many Finnish associations. In addition to shooting the competition I was able to follow the lifting technique that people used, thus making the gig also very useful in my own kettlebelling.

All material is exclusive for Finnish Kettlebell Association. I’ve uploaded a glimpse of the pics to Flickr.

Pood, from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This weeks new word is pood. No, not poo, but pood. A pood is an old and obsolete Russian measurement of mass and it equals approx. 16.38 kg’s. Found this word via an article about the history of Finnish Girevoy Sport, which I found via a blog post about the Karl Fazer Challenge by a friend of mine.

I quote the Wikipedia:

Its usage is preserved in modern Russian in certain specific cases, e.g., in reference to sports weights, such as traditional Russian kettlebells, cast in multiples and fractions of 16 kg (which is pood rounded to metric units). For example, a 24 kg kettlebell is commonly referred to as “one-and-half pood kettlebell” (polutorapudovaya girya). It is also sometimes used when reporting the amounts of bulk agricultural production, such as grains or potatoes.

An old Russian proverb reads, “You never know a man until you have eaten a pood of salt with him.”

So actually, here’s somewhat about one pood:

My Tool for Workout

So USB via ethernet, rite?

Plugging the USB-stick to your computers ethernet port does not give you any kind of rights to complain why the heck the damn thing is not visible or automatically run in the OS. Now I just need those docs from the stick! Maybe it’s just one of those Monday mornings? Or blame it on the computer…

USB via ethernet, rite?

But since the damn thing is not accessible via the ethernet port, why was I looking for the reason first from the OS side? Was the autorun disabled for this device or what the heck had been changed since I’ve last used the stick? Clearly, the width of both the USB and the ethernet ports are of the same amount.

What happens during the first cup of coffee on Monday mornings, are not counted.

Some oldschool lighting and darkroom hardware

There was an ad in the local paper, where someone was giving away (for free that is) some black&white darkroom equipment. After some messaging with the person behind the ad, I was confirmed to visit them and got the information that all the gear would not fit in a small car. That is what they said I mean.

The person and his wife giving away the stuff had worked at the Iittala glass factory long time ago and were now giving away the gear. They were moving away from the old house they were living and, sad but true the man was hindered by an illness and long age. All the gear had been packed for storing and nobody had even moved them in a long time.

Old lighting and darkroom gear

We (my girlfrends dad came with me) gathered all interesting stuff to a van and I promised the old man to take special care of the equipment and that I would even use it.

A quick inventory of all the stuff we hauled away includes:

  • 3 Bron Electronic flash heads with apparel
  • 3 light stands for the flashes
  • A strange, huge device possibly for creating a strong light source
  • Beauty dish, barn doors
  • Bron Elecronic flash generator
  • A couple of hundred different types of light bulbs and tubes for the flashes
  • Durst Laborator 1000 enlarger with B/W head and a collection of different lenses
  • Paterson tanks and reels
  • And many many other
